What you see: a dent, a crack, a bow, daylight between sections
A panel is one horizontal section of the door. The signs are a dent from a bumper, a crack along a seam, a section bowed outward, a hinge pulled away from its panel or a line of light where two sections no longer meet.
A description alone does not show which kind of damage you have, and we give no frequency for any cause.
Panel replacement costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence
Our estimate in Michigan for one replacement panel is $260 to $895 per panel, installed, a model and not a quote. It comes from national published ranges, adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid. Our methodology puts most of the difference between jobs in the parts, which here means sections or a whole door, so ask for both prices in writing on the same visit. A whole new door is on the door replacement page.
The rows after the estimate are wages, which are pay and not price.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $260 to $895 per panel, installed | Built from two national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan garage door technician median wage ratio (0.94). Too few Michigan garage door companies publish a price to show a range, so none is shown. |
| Michigan median hourly wage, mechanical door repairers | $25.18 an hour | Nearest BLS code (49-9011, mechanical door repairers), read through O*NET OnLine. Pay, not price. |
| Michigan 25th to 75th percentile hourly wage | $21.73 to $33.03 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Michigan median annual wage | $52,370 a year | Pay, not price. |
| Detroit-Warren-Dearborn median hourly wage | $24.12 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood median hourly wage | $28.65 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Kalamazoo-Portage median hourly wage | $29.42 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Lansing-East Lansing median hourly wage | $30.96 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| United States median hourly wage, same occupation | $26.79 an hour | Same occupation, national, comparison only. Pay, not price. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes two published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
One section, or the whole door
No source we can cite sets an age or a damage count at which a door should be replaced, so we do not offer one. These questions settle it for your door: can the company match a section, is the rest of the door and its track sound, and what is the written price of each route.
- The company can supply a section that fits your door and track.
- The rest of the door and its track are sound.
- A matching section is not available.
- The company advises that the new section would not suit the old track.
One section or the whole door, and what decides it
We hold no source on whether a company can supply a single section for your door, so ask it to say plainly whether it can match yours. DASMA says the track and sections work together as a system, and that a new door put on old track may not fit, because section thickness, weight, headroom and the position of the opener all matter. That is why to ask what the rest of the door looks like once one panel is replaced.
A whole door is a larger job and an installation, which DASMA calls very dangerous and not recommended for a novice. If the sections are insulated, ask how the company states the thermal figure: DASMA says R-value is calculated for a section only and U-factor is tested on the whole installed door, and the two are not comparable.
Do it yourself or call a company
Pro job. DASMA says installing a door is not recommended for a novice, and the federal opener rule's required instructions say to have a qualified service person make repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware. One thing you can check is the lift handles. DASMA says a door without pinch-resistant joints should have lift handles or suitable gripping points inside and outside, because many homeowners injure fingers between sections, and that the joint between sections is not a suitable gripping point.
Panel damage that cannot wait
- A section has come loose from its hinges or the door will not close.
- A car or person is inside the garage and the door is stuck.
- The property is open and unsecured overnight.
- A dent that does not affect how the door runs.
- A cracked panel on a door that still opens and closes: photograph the damage and book a visit.
What to do before you call
- Photograph the damage and the whole door from the driveway.
- Measure the width and height of the opening and note whether the door is insulated.
- Note whether the door still runs. If it grinds or sticks, stop using the opener.
- Ask for the price of one section and of a whole door, in writing.
Permit position for a panel or a door
No Michigan source we can cite says if replacing a panel or a garage door needs a permit. State law requires a permit for the construction or alteration of a building unless the act or the code excepts it, and the local building department decides. The nearest city wording does not name garage doors, so applying it to one is our inference. Kentwood's FAQ asks for a permit when a replacement door changes the opening size and not when it does not. East Lansing's chart appears to mark door replacement only for historic review and says new or changed openings need a permit application. Ask your city's building department; DASMA says it also sets the wind-load rule for a replacement door.
Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Repair or replace the garage door
Three questions: what is wrong, how many repair visits the door has had in the last two years, and whether you want insulation. You get a direction and the questions to put to a company. It sets no age cut-off, because we hold no source for one, and the costs it mentions are modeled estimates, not collected prices.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Can I replace a single garage door panel?
We hold no source on whether a single section can be matched to your door, so ask. DASMA says the track and sections work together as a system, so ask what the rest of the door looks like before you agree to one panel.
Can I replace a garage door panel myself?
DASMA says installing a garage door can be very dangerous and is not recommended for a novice. The federal opener rule also tells you to have a qualified service person repair cables, spring assemblies and other hardware.
How much does garage door panel replacement cost in Michigan?
Our estimate is $260 to $895 per panel, installed, a model rather than a collected Michigan price. It comes from national published ranges, adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid. Ask for the price of one section and of a whole door in writing.
Does replacing a garage door panel need a permit in Michigan?
No state source we can cite says so either way, so the city decides. Kentwood's FAQ asks for a permit when a replacement door changes the opening size and not when it does not, which is our inference as applied to a garage door. Ask your city's building department.
Do garage door panels need handles?
DASMA says a door without pinch-resistant joints should have lift handles or suitable gripping points inside and outside, because many homeowners injure fingers between sections. It adds that the section joint is not a suitable gripping point. Ask whether a replacement section keeps them.
Will a new section fit the old track?
Ask: DASMA says a new door put on the old track may not fit. Section thickness, weight, headroom and opener location matter, and the track and sections work as a system. A company that replaces a panel should say why the rest is sound.
