Opener hums, reverses or won't respond? What to check first

Short answer

An opener that hums but will not move the door, reverses on the way down or ignores the remote has a different cause in each case. The safe checks are the plug, the remote battery and the photo eyes. Openers made on or after January 1, 1993 must reverse on contact with an obstruction, so a door that does not reverse in the monthly test is a safety fault, not a comfort problem.

What the opener is doing, and what it points to

An opener that hums while the door stays put suggests something between the motor and the door, and a broken spring can be one of them. A door that reverses on the way down can mean an obstruction or the photo eyes, and a door that will not close can mean the same. A wall button that works while the remote does not points to the remote, its battery or its pairing. No light and no sound points to power.

An opener is a motor, a rail, a trolley and an arm that joins it to the door, which is where a repair visit starts looking.

Opener repair costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence

A repair to an opener, its sensors or its remote has an estimate of $105 to $270 per job in Michigan. That is a model and not a quote: national published ranges, adjusted for Michigan garage door technician wages. Our methodology says parts drive most of the difference between jobs, and that includes openers and sensors. A repair that ends in a new opener is priced on the opener install page.

The rows after the estimate are wages, which are pay and not price.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes two published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

What the federal rule requires of an opener

16 CFR 1211 applies to residential garage door operators made on or after January 1, 1993. A downward-moving door must start to reverse within 2 seconds of contact with an obstruction and return to the fully open position. Openers must also allow a secondary entrapment protection device such as a photo eye, and the owner's instructions must tell you to test monthly: the door must reverse on contact with a 1 1/2 inch object, or a 2 by 4 laid flat, on the floor. Retest after any adjustment of force or limit of travel. A CPSC recall in 2023 shows why it matters: LiftMaster myQ control panels could fail to provide entrapment protection.

If the door is heavy or needs two hands to lift, DASMA says it is probably out of balance and a stronger opener is not the answer. DASMA also says that if the door does not reverse readily, the sensitivity may be set wrongly, which is dangerous, and recommends a trained door systems technician for that adjustment.

Do it yourself or call a company

Check yourself, then call. You can check the plug and the outlet, replace a remote battery, clear the photo eyes' path and wipe their lenses, and run the monthly reversal test. Do not bypass the sensors: the federal rule requires secondary entrapment protection. Leave sensitivity adjustment, balance and anything touching springs, cables or brackets to a trained technician, as DASMA and the federal rule say.

Opener problems that cannot wait

Call right away
  • The door does not reverse on the test object or on contact.
  • A person or vehicle is trapped, or the door closes on something.
  • The door is stuck open and the property cannot be secured.
  • The door is heavy, drops or will not hold itself up.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A remote or keypad that has stopped working while the wall button works.
  • A worn light bulb or a noisy opener with the door working normally.

What to check before you call

  1. Check that the opener is plugged in and the outlet is live.
  2. Replace the remote battery and try the wall button.
  3. Clear the path of the photo eyes, wipe both lenses and check that each shows a steady light.
  4. Run the reversal test with a 2 by 4 laid flat, and stop using the opener if it fails.
  5. Note the opener's make and the date on its label.

Permit position for opener work

The Part 8 electrical rule says no electrical permit is required to install or replace equipment approved for connection to a suitable permanently installed receptacle. It does not name garage door openers, but a plug-in opener on an existing outlet fits that wording on our interpretation. A new circuit or outlet is electrical wiring, which Michigan law reserves to licensed individuals (MCL 339.5731), with exceptions such as a homeowner's own work in an owner-occupied single-family home; that part is also our interpretation. Kentwood's inspections FAQ says electrical permits are not required only for minor work, and that all new installations require a permit regardless of cost. Ask your city building department.

Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job

Garage door symptom checker

Two questions: is anyone or anything trapped, and what is the door doing. You get what the symptom points to, a plain verdict, either safe to look at yourself or a job for a trained technician, and what we can say about cost. The verdicts rest on the federal opener rule and the trade association's safety pages, and nothing here asks for your name.

Questions people ask

What do you do when your garage door opener stops working?

Check the power, the remote battery and the photo eyes first. If the opener runs but the door does not move, or you heard a bang earlier, stop and call a company, because a broken spring can cause both. The federal rule says to have a qualified service person repair springs and cables.

How do I test the auto-reverse on my garage door opener?

Lay a 2 by 4 flat on the floor, or use a 1 1/2 inch object, and close the door: it must reverse on contact. The federal rule says to test monthly and after any adjustment. If it fails, stop using the opener.

Do all garage door openers have to reverse?

Openers made on or after January 1, 1993 for sale in the United States must meet the federal standard, which includes reversal on contact within 2 seconds. An opener made earlier is outside that federal standard, so check the date on the label.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door opener in Michigan?

No state source we can cite says so. The Part 8 electrical rule exempts equipment that connects to a suitable existing receptacle and does not name openers, so applying it is our inference. A new circuit is wiring that Michigan law reserves to licensed individuals, with exceptions. Ask your city building department.

Can a more powerful opener fix a heavy door?

No. DASMA says a heavy door that needs two hands is probably out of balance, and the answer is not a more powerful opener.

How much does garage door opener repair cost in Michigan?

Our estimate is $105 to $270 per job, a model rather than a collected Michigan price. It is built from national published ranges and adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid, so it is a way to check a written quote, not a quote. Ask for a written estimate that names the parts and the labor.
