Garage door stuck or broken? What to do first

Short answer

If the door will not lift after a loud bang, is off its track, or drops when released, keep people, pets and vehicles clear and do not try to lift it. The federal rule for door openers warns that weak or broken springs may allow the door to fall rapidly, causing injury or death, and tells you to have a qualified service person repair cables and spring assemblies. A separate question, covered below, is whether a broken door counts as an emergency for contract purposes.

What you see, and how urgent it is

A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift points to a broken spring. A crooked door with a cable hanging points to a cable or bracket. A door stuck half open can be either of those, or the opener. A door that will not close at all leaves the house open, which is the other kind of urgency. We have no source that says which of these is most common, so we do not rank them.

What is urgent depends on who could be hurt or what is exposed. A person or vehicle under or beside a door that may drop is the first case. An open, unsecured garage overnight is the second. A remote that has stopped working is neither.

Emergency garage door costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence

Our estimate for emergency garage door labor in Michigan is $60 to $160 an hour, before any call-out fee. It is a model, not a quote: a national published range, adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid. A second estimate row covers an emergency cable repair, $200 to $380 per emergency cable repair visit. Before the technician starts, ask for the call-out fee and what it covers, because the estimate leaves it out.

Our methodology says parts drive most of the difference between jobs. The rows after the estimates are wages, which are pay and not price.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

What a company does on an emergency visit

The company has to find which part failed: spring, cable, bracket, track or opener. We hold no source for the order a technician works in, so ask the company to name the part before it quotes. If the door has two springs and one has broken, DASMA says to replace both, even the one that is not broken, to prevent damage when the second breaks. Ask whether the quote covers both springs and whether the cables were checked.

Do it yourself or call a company

Pro job. Do not lift, force or run the opener on a door you think has a broken spring. The federal rule's required instructions say to have a qualified service person make repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware, and DASMA says spring systems "are dangerous and should be repaired only by trained professionals." Safe steps are to keep everyone clear, photograph the door from a distance and note what you heard.

Your three-day cancellation right and the emergency waiver

Michigan's home solicitation law gives a buyer until midnight of the third business day to cancel a qualifying sale. The definition has wide exclusions, so it is not clear that the right covers you when you phone a company yourself, and we do not promise it. The law also has an emergency exception. It applies if you ask for the work without delay because of an emergency, the seller starts in good faith, and you give a separate dated, handwritten, signed statement that describes the emergency and waives the three days. The act does not say whether a broken spring is an emergency. Read any such statement before you sign it, and do not sign one for a job that can wait.

What counts as an emergency

Call right away
  • A person, pet or vehicle is trapped by the door, or someone is hurt: call emergency services first.
  • The door drops, or falls when released, or will not hold itself up.
  • A bang, then a door that will not lift, with a car inside the garage.
  • The door is off its track, or a cable is hanging, and the door cannot close.
  • The property is open and unsecured overnight.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A remote or keypad that has stopped working.
  • A noisy door that still opens and closes normally.
  • A worn bottom seal.
Is this an emergency?

Answer these before anything else. They take about ten seconds. Whatever the answer, do not try to lift a door with a broken spring.

  1. Is the door stuck open or closed with a car or a person inside?
  2. Did you hear a loud bang, and now the door will not lift?
  3. Is the door off its track, or is a cable hanging loose?
  4. Is the door heavy, dropping or falling when released?
  5. Is the property open and unsecured overnight?

Yes to the first, fourth or fifth: this is an emergency. Keep everyone clear of the door, do not try to lift or force it, and use the form with Emergency ticked. Yes to the second or third: leave the door alone and send the request today.

What to do before the company arrives

  1. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the door.
  2. Do not try to lift, force or pull the door, and switch the opener off or unplug it.
  3. Photograph the door, the springs and any loose cable from a safe distance.
  4. Note what you heard and when, and the width of the door.
  5. Ask the company for the call-out fee and for the part it found, in writing.

Permits for emergency repairs

Nothing in the state's published material that we can cite says if repairing a spring, cable or opener needs a permit. State law requires a building permit for construction or alteration of a building unless the act or code excepts it, and the city decides how that applies. Kentwood's inspections FAQ says a permit is not required for replacement doors when the opening size is not altered. It does not name garage doors, so applying it to one is our inference, and we have not confirmed it with the city. Ask your city building department.

Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job

Garage door symptom checker

Two questions: is anyone or anything trapped, and what is the door doing. You get what the symptom points to, a plain verdict, either safe to look at yourself or a job for a trained technician, and what we can say about cost. The verdicts rest on the federal opener rule and the trade association's safety pages, and nothing here asks for your name.

Questions people ask

Is a broken garage door considered an emergency?

It is an emergency if someone could be hurt or the property cannot be secured. The federal opener rule warns that weak or broken springs may allow the door to fall rapidly, causing injury or death, so keep clear of a door you think has one. The home solicitation act does not define an emergency; see the waiver section above.

Who do you call when your garage door won't open?

Call a garage door company, and call emergency services first if someone is hurt or trapped. If you heard a bang, do not try to lift the door yourself: DASMA says spring systems should be repaired only by trained professionals.

Can I lift the garage door by hand when the spring is broken?

We do not recommend it. The federal rule's required instructions warn that weak or broken springs may allow the door to fall rapidly, causing injury or death, and say to have a qualified service person repair spring assemblies. Keep clear and call a company.

Do I have three days to cancel an emergency garage door repair in Michigan?

Not if you sign the emergency waiver, and possibly not in any case. The right applies to a qualifying home solicitation sale, and a customer who phones a company may or may not be covered. The emergency exception needs a separate dated handwritten signed statement describing the emergency and waiving the three days.

How much does emergency garage door repair cost in Michigan?

Our estimate for the labor is $60 to $160 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee, a model and not a collected Michigan price. It is built from a national published range and adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid, and it leaves out the call-out fee. Ask for a written estimate that names the parts and the labor.
