What you see, hear and find
A bang from the garage, then a door that is heavy or will not rise, points to a broken spring. An opener that hums while the door stays put can point to the same thing. A door that sags to one side or drops when you let go suggests springs or cables that are no longer carrying the weight. You may also find a gap in a torsion spring, the coil on a bar above the door. The symptom alone does not tell us which part failed, and we give no frequency for any cause.
Spring replacement costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence
Our estimate for replacing the springs on one door in Michigan is $155 to $330 per job, both springs, and $95 to $215 per job, both extension springs. It is a model, not a quote: national published ranges, adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid. Parts drive most of the difference between spring jobs, according to our methodology. Ask for the springs, cables and labor to be itemized. One Michigan company's own published spring prices follow the estimates, and its price for a pair is above our range; one company is not a range for Michigan, and a real quote can land outside ours too.
Wages come last: they are pay, not price.

|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $155 to $330 per job, both springs | Built from two national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan garage door technician median wage ratio (0.94). Too few Michigan garage door companies publish a price to show a range, so none is shown. |
| Estimated range for extension springs, not a quote | $95 to $215 per job, both extension springs | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan garage door technician median wage ratio (0.94). | Isabella Garage Door, Mt. Pleasant: spring replacement, as the company publishes it | $395 to $525 for a pair of springs; $325 to $395 for a single spring | Read on the company's own pricing page on Oct 19, 2026. One company's price, not a Michigan range and not a quote. Larger or heavy-duty doors need bigger springs and cost more, the company says. |

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes two published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
What the springs do, and what to ask about a replacement
Springs counterbalance the door, which is why a healthy door feels light and an opener can be modest. A torsion spring sits on a shaft above the opening and winds as the door lowers. An extension spring runs along the horizontal track and stretches. DASMA says extension springs need a safety cable through the spring, secured at each end, because with the door down the spring is under high tension and a break may cause injury.
On a two-spring door DASMA says to replace both. We hold no source for the steps of a visit, so ask whether the company also checks the cables, the brackets and the balance. A door that is heavy or needs two hands is probably out of balance, DASMA says, and a more powerful opener is not the answer.
Do it yourself or call a company
Pro job. DASMA calls the springs "arguably the most important and most dangerous part of your door," and the federal rule's required instructions say to have a qualified service person make repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware. They also warn that weak or broken springs may allow the door to fall rapidly, causing injury or death. We found no source that makes a homeowner spring replacement safe, so we do not describe how. Our guide to the bang and the broken spring explains the reasoning.
Spring problems that cannot wait
- The door will not lift and a car or person is inside the garage.
- The door falls, or drops when released.
- A cable is loose or hanging.
- The property is open and unsecured overnight.
- Wanting an inspection of an older door's springs. DASMA says older doors should have springs inspected by a professional technician.
What to do before you call
- Keep clear of the door and do not try to lift it.
- Unplug the opener or switch it off.
- Photograph the spring and the opener label from a safe distance.
- Note if you see one spring or two.
- Try the spring life calculator if you know the spring's rated cycles; it is arithmetic, not a prediction.
Permit position for spring work
No Michigan source we can cite answers the permit question for spring replacement. State law requires a permit for construction or alteration of a building unless the act or code excepts it, and the local building department decides how that applies. Ask your city building department. Neither "no permit is ever needed" nor "a permit is always needed" is a statement of Michigan law, so do not accept either.
Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Spring life calculator
This is one line of arithmetic: the spring's rated cycles, divided by the cycles the door runs in a year. It tells you how long the rating would last at your pace of use. It does not predict when a spring will break, and we have no source for how long a spring lasts in any climate. If your door has one, read the rating from the spring's tag or the door's paperwork.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Can I replace the spring on my garage door myself?
DASMA says no: spring systems are dangerous and should be repaired only by trained professionals. The federal rule's required instructions also say to have a qualified service person make repairs to cables and spring assemblies.
Can you replace just one spring on a garage door?
If the door has two springs, DASMA says to replace both, even if one is not broken. That prevents damage when the second breaks and keeps the door working efficiently.
Is it worth fixing a garage door spring?
A door with a broken spring is not safe to run, so the question is who repairs it and what you pay. DASMA says to use trained professionals. Ask for the repair price and a price for a new door on the same visit; our repair or replace tool lists the questions.
Do extension springs need anything extra?
Yes, according to DASMA: a safety cable through the spring, secured to the wall or ceiling at each end, because a spring under tension with the door down may cause injury if it breaks.
Do Michigan winters break garage door springs faster?
We found no source that says so, so we do not say it. DASMA's cold-climate sheet advises keeping the door closed where possible in climates of extreme heat or cold and lubricating per the manufacturer's instructions.
How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Michigan?
Our estimate is $155 to $330 per job, both springs, and $95 to $215 for extension springs. It is built from national published ranges and adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid, so use it to check a written quote and not as one. One Michigan company publishes a price for a pair of springs above this range, and the cost table shows it. Ask for a written estimate that names the parts and the labor.
