What you see: rollers out, a crooked door, a scraping jam
The signs are a roller or wheel sitting outside its track channel, one side of the door higher or lower than the other, a section bowed or buckled, a door stuck part-way with the opener straining, or a loud scrape or bang as the door moved. We cannot tell you from the signs what caused it, and we give no frequency for any cause.
The door may look as if it needs only a push back into place. That is the one thing not to do. The track holds the door, the cables hold the bottom corners and the springs hold the weight, so any of the three may have shifted.
Off-track door costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence
Putting a door back on its track has an estimate of $160 to $380 per repair in Michigan. It is a model, not a quote: a national published range, widened and adjusted for Michigan garage door technician wages. A bent track or a damaged section changes the job, and our methodology puts most of the difference between jobs in the parts, so ask what the company found before it names a price.
The rows after the estimate are wages, which are pay and not price.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $160 to $380 per repair | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan garage door technician median wage ratio (0.94). Too few Michigan garage door companies publish a price to show a range, so none is shown. |
| Michigan median hourly wage, mechanical door repairers | $25.18 an hour | Nearest BLS code (49-9011, mechanical door repairers), read through O*NET OnLine. Pay, not price. |
| Michigan 25th to 75th percentile hourly wage | $21.73 to $33.03 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Michigan median annual wage | $52,370 a year | Pay, not price. |
| Detroit-Warren-Dearborn median hourly wage | $24.12 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood median hourly wage | $28.65 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Kalamazoo-Portage median hourly wage | $29.42 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Lansing-East Lansing median hourly wage | $30.96 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| United States median hourly wage, same occupation | $26.79 an hour | Same occupation, national, comparison only. Pay, not price. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
What is holding the door, and what to ask a company to check
DASMA says the track and the sections work together as a system, so the problem may reach beyond the track. Ask the company which of these it checked: the track and its brackets, the rollers, the sections and hinges, the cables and bottom brackets, and the springs and balance. DASMA says the bottom brackets are connected to the springs and under extreme tension.
Ask the company which of three jobs it is proposing: seat the door back on a sound track, repair or replace a bent track, or replace damaged sections or the whole door.
Do it yourself or call a company
Pro job. We found no source that makes a homeowner re-seating of a door safe, and the sources we do hold point the other way. The federal rule's required instructions say to have a qualified service person make repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware. DASMA says springs are dangerous, cables should be replaced only by a trained technician, and installing a door is not recommended for a novice. Leave the opener off and keep out from under a door that is partly open.
What to ask, and what not to accept
Find out what was bent or broken, whether the track alone can be repaired and what a new door and track would cost. DASMA says a new door put on the old track may not fit, because section thickness, weight, headroom and opener location all matter, so a company that proposes replacing only part of a system should say why that part is enough. Ask whether the cables and springs were checked at the same visit.
Get the price in writing, with the call-out fee, and do not pay for the entire job in advance; LARA advises against it. If a company claims a license, ask for the number and check it on LARA's license lookup. As far as we can tell from LARA's list of licensed professions, Michigan has no garage door license of its own. A residential builder license may apply to this work, and we assert neither that it does nor that it does not.
Off-track doors that cannot wait
- A car or person is inside the garage and the door is stuck or crooked.
- The door is partly open, will not hold or drops.
- The property is open and unsecured overnight.
- An older door that scrapes but still closes, which is worth a look during the annual visit DASMA recommends.
What to do before you call
- Stop using the door and switch the opener off at the breaker.
- Keep people, pets and vehicles away from the opening.
- Photograph the track, the rollers and the door's tilt from a safe distance.
- Note what happened first: a bump, a bang, a stuck remote.
- Do not force, pry or hammer anything.
Permit position for track repair
A track repair is a different question from a new door, and no Michigan source we can cite answers it. State law requires a permit for building construction or alteration unless the act or the code excepts it, and the local building department decides. Kentwood's FAQ asks for a permit when a replacement door changes the opening size and not when it does not. It names doors, not garage doors, and applying it to one is our inference. Ask your city's building department.
Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Garage door symptom checker
Two questions: is anyone or anything trapped, and what is the door doing. You get what the symptom points to, a plain verdict, either safe to look at yourself or a job for a trained technician, and what we can say about cost. The verdicts rest on the federal opener rule and the trade association's safety pages, and nothing here asks for your name.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Can I fix a garage door that is off track myself?
We found no source that makes it safe, and DASMA and the federal rule point to trained technicians for the cables and springs involved. The required instructions in the federal opener rule say to have a qualified service person repair cables, spring assemblies and other hardware.
How much does it cost to repair a garage door that is off track?
Our estimate is $160 to $380 per repair, a model and not a collected Michigan price. A national published range, widened and adjusted for what Michigan garage door technicians are paid, sits behind it. Ask the company what it found and for an itemized written estimate.
Why not just push the door back onto the track?
Because the door is still held by cables and springs under load, and DASMA says the bottom brackets are under extreme tension. DASMA says they should be adjusted or loosened only by a trained door systems technician. The federal rule warns that weak or broken springs may allow the door to fall rapidly.
Will an off-track door need a whole new door?
Not necessarily, but DASMA says the track and sections work as a system, so ask what was damaged. A new door on the old track may not fit, DASMA says. Ask the company what was bent or cracked, and for the price of the repair beside the price of a new door. Our repair or replace tool lists the questions.
Is an off-track door an emergency?
It is if someone or something is trapped, the door will not hold or the property is open overnight. In Michigan an emergency can matter for the three-day cancellation right: the act lets you waive it with a separate dated handwritten signed statement describing the emergency, and it does not say whether a garage door failure counts.
