When you are shopping: an old opener, a heavy door, a dead remote
A new opener comes up when the old one has died, is noisy or slow, or will not take a remote, and when the door has become hard to move. The last may not be an opener problem. DASMA says that a door that is heavy or needs two hands is probably out of balance, and that the answer is not a more powerful opener, so have the balance looked at before you buy anything.
An opener that came with an older house may predate the federal standard, which applies to openers made on or after January 1, 1993. Check the label for the date.
Opener installation costs in Michigan: our estimate and the evidence
Installing an opener in Michigan has an estimate of $245 to $675 per job, installed. It is a model, not a quote: national published ranges, adjusted for Michigan garage door technician wages, with no permit fee added. Our methodology says parts drive most of the difference between jobs, so the written price should say if sensors, keypads and remotes are in it. Ask for the opener, the labor and any electrical work to be listed separately. One Michigan company's published price follows the estimate and ends above its top.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $245 to $675 per job, installed | Built from two national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan garage door technician median wage ratio (0.94). Too few Michigan garage door companies publish a price to show a range, so none is shown. |
| Isabella Garage Door, Mt. Pleasant: new opener installation, as the company publishes it | $495 to $750 installed | Read on the company's own pricing page on Oct 19, 2026. One company's price, not a Michigan range and not a quote. The company says the price depends on door type and options. |
| Michigan median hourly wage, mechanical door repairers | $25.18 an hour | Nearest BLS code (49-9011, mechanical door repairers), read through O*NET OnLine. Pay, not price. |
| Michigan 25th to 75th percentile hourly wage | $21.73 to $33.03 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Michigan median annual wage | $52,370 a year | Pay, not price. |
| Detroit-Warren-Dearborn median hourly wage | $24.12 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood median hourly wage | $28.65 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Kalamazoo-Portage median hourly wage | $29.42 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| Lansing-East Lansing median hourly wage | $30.96 an hour | Pay, not price. |
| United States median hourly wage, same occupation | $26.79 an hour | Same occupation, national, comparison only. Pay, not price. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes two published national ranges for this job (cost guides from third-party sites that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies them by Michigan's garage door technician median wage ratio to the US (0.94, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine, using mechanical door repairers as the nearest occupation). The wage rows in the table are what that occupation is paid, which is not a price. Where a Michigan company publishes a price, it only keeps the low end of the range from sitting above it. We have not collected quotes, and only two Michigan garage door companies published a regular dollar price we could count, so no range of Michigan prices is shown. A real quote can land outside the range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
What a new opener must do, and what the installer sets
Under the federal rule, a downward-moving door must start reversing within 2 seconds of contact with an obstruction, and the opener must have one of three forms of secondary entrapment protection: a constant-pressure close control, a connection for an external device such as a photoelectric sensor or edge sensor, or approved inherent protection. The owner's instructions must tell you to test the opener monthly: the door must reverse on contact with a 1 1/2 inch object, or a 2 by 4 board laid flat, on the floor.
DASMA's code inspection checklist for sectional doors lists a manual release within six feet of the floor, the reversing mechanism tested, photoelectric eyes installed and tested, a control station at least five feet high and warning labels in place.
Do it yourself or call a company
Check yourself, then call. DASMA says installing an opener is generally easier and safer than installing a door, but that improper installation can be hazardous and that a trained technician is recommended. Have the balance checked before you buy, and run the reversal test when the job is done. If the garage has no suitable outlet, the federal rule's instructions tell you to contact a licensed electrician to install a suitable receptacle.
The outlet, the circuit and the electrical permit
Michigan law says only an individual licensed under the act shall install electrical wiring (MCL 339.5731), subject to exceptions; one is a homeowner's own work on electrical equipment in an owner-occupied single-family home (MCL 339.5737). The Part 8 electrical rule says no electrical permit is required to install or replace equipment approved for connection to a suitable permanently installed receptacle, and it does not name garage door openers, so a cord-and-plug opener on an existing outlet fits that wording on our interpretation. A new circuit, on that same interpretation, does not.
Kentwood's inspections FAQ is the clearest city wording we found: an electrical permit is not required only for minor work, such as replacing a faulty outlet or switch or equipment valued under $100, and all new installations need one regardless of cost. The FAQ does not name openers.
Opener problems that cannot wait
- The door will not reverse when it meets an obstruction, and someone uses the garage.
- The door is stuck open or closed with a car or person inside.
- The property is open and unsecured overnight.
- A working opener that is noisy or slow: book a visit when it suits you.
- Wanting a newer opener with sensors: shop with the balance and outlet questions above.
What to do before you call
- Check the label on the old opener for its date.
- If the door felt heavy before the opener failed, say so: it may be out of balance.
- Find the outlet: is there one, and is it a standard plug socket?
- Write down the door's width and whether it is insulated.
- Ask what sensors, remotes and keypads come with the opener.
Permit position for an opener
The building permit question for an opener has no answer in any Michigan source we can cite. The electrical side is clearer: a plug-in opener on an existing receptacle fits the Part 8 exemption on our interpretation, and a new circuit is wiring that Michigan law reserves to licensed individuals, with exceptions. Where a permit covers new work in a home with an attached garage, Michigan law also calls for a carbon monoxide device near bedrooms and in areas adjacent to the garage. Ask your city's building department.
Ask the company for its legal name and, if it says it holds a license, the license number, and check that number with the agency that issued it before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Garage door symptom checker
Two questions: is anyone or anything trapped, and what is the door doing. You get what the symptom points to, a plain verdict, either safe to look at yourself or a job for a trained technician, and what we can say about cost. The verdicts rest on the federal opener rule and the trade association's safety pages, and nothing here asks for your name.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Can I replace my garage door opener myself?
DASMA says installing an opener is generally easier and safer than installing a door, but it recommends a trained technician. It adds that improper installation can be hazardous. The federal instructions tell you to contact a licensed electrician if there is no suitable receptacle.
What safety features must a new garage door opener have?
Reversal within 2 seconds of contact, and secondary entrapment protection such as photo eyes. That is the federal standard for openers made on or after January 1, 1993. The instructions must also tell you to test the opener monthly with a 1 1/2 inch object or a 2 by 4 laid flat.
Does installing a garage door opener need an electrical permit in Michigan?
A plug-in opener on an existing receptacle fits the state's exemption on our interpretation, and a new circuit does not. The exemption covers equipment approved for connection to a suitable receptacle, and the rule does not name openers. A new circuit is electrical wiring, which Michigan law reserves to licensed individuals, with exceptions. Ask your city: Kentwood's FAQ says all new electrical installations require a permit regardless of cost.
Where should the wall button and photo eyes go?
DASMA says photo eyes should be no higher than six inches above the garage floor, and the wall button at least five feet above floors, landings or steps, out of reach of children.
Is a more powerful opener the fix for a heavy door?
No: DASMA says that if a door is heavy or needs two hands, it is probably out of balance, and the answer is not a more powerful opener. Have the balance checked first.
How much does garage door opener installation cost in Michigan?
About $245 to $675 per job, installed by our estimate, a model and not a collected Michigan price. Ask for the opener, the labor and any electrical work to be listed separately.
